Championship Weekend Starts at The Borgata Winter Poker Open

One of the best poker weekends of the year is on tap this weekend as Borgata goes all in on the 2012 Borgata Winter Poker Open with the opening day of the $2 Million Guaranteed Borgata Winter Open Championship on Sunday Jan. 29 (Day 1A) and Monday Jan. 30 (Day 1B) at 11am both days.

Just a little quick history. Last year’s Borgata Winter Poker Open champ was Vadim Shlez, who won $533,210 of the $2,369,400 total buy-in from a field of 718 players. With the 2012 Open setting crowd records, the sky’s the limit this year.

Plus, with the start days for the $3,300 + $200, No Limit Hold’Em Championship apon us, the bulk of the satellite qualifiers get underway starting today (Jan. 27) at 3pm.

Here’s the satellite schedule again:

The qualifying tournaments offer up championship seats in a simple percentage. If one in 10 players win seats in the tournament, than 10 seats would be awarded for 100 players (pretty sure of the math this time).

The Borgata Winter Open Championship Event starts players with 30K in tournament chips. Re-entries through Level 4. Levels are at 75 minutes to start. Antes kick in at Level 5.

$5,000 will be subtracted from the prize pool and awarded to the chip leaders after Day 1A and Day 1B respectively.

On site registration is open 8am until Midnight daily for all remaining Borgata Winter Poker Open events through Feb. 3.

Saturday’s main event is a Six Max No Limit, $200,000 guaranteed $1,000 + $90 buy-in No Limit Hold’Em tournament starting at 11am. It’s a two-day tournament through Sunday.

ESPN's Michael Kay is bringing his drive-time sports talk show to Borgata during the energy and action of the Borgata Winter Poker Open Friday Jan. 27.

Kay is also a play by play announcer for the New York Yankees on the YES network. The Michael Kay Show airs from 3-7pm on ESPN New York 1050 AM. or at http://espn.go.com/newyork/radio/.

Borgata Winter Poker Open Brings In Record-Breaking Crowds

By now you probably know that the Borgata Winter Poker Open is a record breaker for Borgata.

No? Let me tell you about it.

The Borgata Winter Poker Open is a record breaker for the casino.

Oh you want proof? I got stats here.

The 1,873 players (including re-entries) that played in the opening event is the largest opening day crowd for a Borgata poker open ever, beating any and all Borgata Poker Opens, the signature poker event on the East Coast.

That’s a nine percent up-tick over the 2011 Borgata Poker Open (September) and a whopping 27 percent increase over the 2011 Borgata Winter Poker Open.

The prize pool, at $936,500, is also a record for a Borgata opening event, easily beating the $500,000 guarantee.

Of course the previous opening prize pool record came at last year’s Borgata Winter Poker Open on a $500 + $60 game at $736,000.

There’s no question the Borgata Winter Poker Open is fast becoming one of the most popular signature poker events on the East Coast.

Of course you can’t maintain these crowds in every event at an action-packed room like Borgata’s as secondary, satellite and cash games continue. But crowds have been large at most of the early events except for specialty tournaments such as Stud and Pot Limit Omaha.

Event 2, a $350 + $50 + $100 bounty tournament drew 550 players and a total buy-in of $192,500.

Event 7 this Saturday, a $350 + $50 No Limit tournaments, drew 545 players and a total buy-in of $190,750.

Drawing better than 500 for medium-sized tournaments shows the 2012 Winter Open is bringing them in.

Even Event 6, a pretty high-stakes buy-in at $1,000 + $90 drew better than 200 players.

So what’s the point of all this? Hey, the place is CROWDED.

Come on down. You’re not going to just end up playing with the same bunch of folks you always see at the Borgata Buffet (one of Borgata’s many fine casual dining options) or a bunch a Baltimore Raven fans fantasizing about Billy Cundiff making the kick.

OK, they’ll be there, but so will a lot of other people including the best poker talent on the East Coast and from around the country.

One other reason for the crowds is probably the Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot, which now sits at more than $450,000 and added $45K in the last three days. That’s an amazing pick up for just one weekend, really.

Big Weekend at Borgata as the Winter Poker Open Rolls On

It’s going to be a jam-packed weekend at Borgata as the Winter Poker Open moves along, but before we get to that, let’s just take a moment to reflect on the early action.

Wow, Will “The Thrill” Failla is on fire.

In case you missed it (We’ve got a great live blog of Winter Poker Open events to keep you up to date) Failla won the massive first event of the open and $165,053.

That brings him to just under $3 Million in career tournament winnings.

Failla won over $750,000 in August at the Legends of Poker WPT event and followed it quickly with an about $50K cash at Borgata Poker Open in September. And that was after five cashes at the WSOP in July.

Then he had to wait like three whole months before hitting a big tournament win again at the Borgata Winter Poker Open. I’m thinking that’s still hot.

Failla, from Commack N.Y. is, of course a local legend and frequent Borgata player and signifies the great competition at Borgata.

There were 1,873 entries and a total buy-in of $936,500 for Event 1. Event 2, a $350 + $50 No Limit tournament drew 550 players, so Borgata Winter Poker Open crowds are pretty big this year.

And you (segue alert) can get that championship feeling too as the open continues through Feb. 3 with daily events. This weekend is one of the busiest on the schedule.

Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot Hits For $50K

We told you that Borgata has been on a Bad Beat Jackpot streak during large evnts like the Borgata Winter Poker Open.

And Wednesday, James Vrouletes of Astoria proved that with a $20,001 (That extra dollar is sweet) hit on the Borgata Small Bad Beat Jackpot. The $50K small jackpot leaves the full jackpot at $391,382. Let’s see how fast that gets back over $400K.

The small bad beat resets to $50,000.

The hit came right in the middle of the opening event at The Borgata Winter Poker Open at about 1pm Wednesday on a $1-$2-NL table.

Four deuces, the lowest hand that qualifies for the bad beat went down to quad eights. Timothy Bean of Sarasota Springs held the eights and gets $10,000.

Seven other players won $ 2,857.

Borgata Winter Poker Open First Day Starts Strong

Just a quick update on what’s turned out to be an amazing first day for the Borgata Winter Poker Open.

There’s a lot of numbers still to be finalized, but this year’s opening event, a $500K guaranteed, $500 + $60 Deepstack No limit event has drawn more than 1,800 players. More than 900 are already out, but there’s going to be a lot of players left on Day 2 Thursday.

And the event has easily smoked the $500K guarantee and should top $900,000 in total buy-ins (of course trusting my math is never a good idea, as some of you know).

Last year’s opening event attracted 1,472 players and was won by Alex Rocha of South Setauket, NY, who took home over $150,00. Unfortunately, Rocha has already been sent to the rail so a new winner will be crowned.

In fact, this turnout even tops the opener of the 2011 Borgata Open in September which drew just over 1,700 players . When the final numbers are in, it could be a record breaker.

Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot Tops $400K (and some other updates)

There’s one thing you can always count on as the Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot starts to climb into the stratosphere. Players will turn out.

So in just about 10 days, the jackpot has climbed more than $100,000 and is currently at about $408,000 (assuming no one’s hit it late Monday).

If it holds, it will be the third straight time the jackpot has been over $400K at the start of a major Borgata open, with the Borgata Winter Poker Open starting Wednesday (Jan. 18).

Hey, timing is everything so if you make a quick exit from a tournament (of course we hope you don‘t), that jackpot will be sitting there waiting at the cash tables.

Of course, the small jackpot, quads deuces to quad nines minimum, is out there too at $50K. But with the full jackpot at quad 10s minimum and this high, you’re almost rooting to get tripped up by a straight flush. OK, maybe there‘s nothing almost about it.

We also promised an update on the Borgata Winter Poker Open Leaderboard prizes.

First place, of course, wins a seat at the Borgata Spring Poker Open championship event in April.

Leading The Borgata Poker Open Leaderboards With James Boyle

When James Boyle, a Borgata poker regular and fast rising star in the poker world, is hanging around the poker room during an event like The Borgata Winter Poker Open, he knows he’s going to get some attention.

Boyle, of Harve de Grace Md., has twice won the Borgata Poker Tournament Leaderboard competition at Borgata Opens - The 2011 Borgata Poker Open and the 2011 Borgata Winter Poker Open.

And that has made him a guy people want to talk to.

“It really amazes me the buzz that surrounds the leaderboard,” Boyle says. “And it’s an amazing conversation starter with people, some I don’t even know very well. But they’ll come up to me and start talking about the leaderboard whether I’m on it or not. And I like that. I like talking to people. Like I said, it creates tremendous excitement and you’ll see people on their iPods and following it on the blogs throughout the whole open.

“And lots of times it’s very exciting,” he added. “Both times I won it really came down to the last day. It’s a great structure and it keeps things very exciting.”

For newcomers, the leaderboard system is an exciting promotion added to all major Borgata poker opens. All players, by participating in any open events, are tracked throughout the tournament and awarded points under a highly secret, intensely complicated formula developed by NASA scientists.

OK, little exageration. It’s really not that complicated.

Points are awarded based on three criteria:

- Tournament Buy-In Amount
- Total Event Entries
- Place Finished

Borgata Tournament Leaderboard points are calculated by multiplying the point factors from all three criteria. So all players get base points by being in events and “bonus points” for things like how often they win events or cash. The system applies not only to main events, but also qualifiers and secondary events and a daily tab of the results is posted.

Well, it’s a little complicated. But Boyle seems to have figured something out.

“I joke with people that its all fixed,” he laughs. “But really, there is a strategy to it. Basically, it’s about doing well across the board. If you cash a lot and stay in the mix in a lot of tournaments, then you can go far. It’s not just based on money. If it was, the winners of the big events would always be the leaders. That’s why I say it’s a fair structure. Winning some of the smaller tournaments can really give you a strong showing.”

While prizes are awarded for top finishers (more on that Monday), the main prize for the overall winner is always a seat at the next Borgata Poker Open (in this case the Borgata Spring Poker Open) championship event.

Michael Michnik, of Hollywood Fla., for example, was the leader board winner at the 2011 Borgata Fall Poker Open and won a $3,500 entry to the Borgata Winter Poker Open championship event Jan. 29 to Feb. 3.

And that’s a prize worth playing for says Boyle.

“Players of all calibers can really compete in this,” he says. “And that grand prize of a seat in the championship event at the next open really gives a chance to a lot of players who might not be able to swing it otherwise.”

It’s just another example, says Boyle, of why Borgata Poker rules.

“I’ve really only been playing professionally for a couple of years and it was at the Borgata where it all started,” he says. “I‘m only two hours away in Maryland and I consider it my home base, my East Coast home. They really do it right.”

Borgata Winter Poker Open Championship Qualifiers

There’s a certain thrill that comes with playing in a high stakes tournament such as the $2 Million Guaranteed Borgata Winter Open Championship starting Jan. 29 and 30. And Borgata wants every player, regardless of bankroll, to have a shot at experiencing that thrill.

Satellite qualifiers for the $3.300 + $200, five-day championship tournament start Tuesday Jan. 24 with a $175 + $25 qualifier at 3pm.

You don’t have to win the tournament to play, as ~ one in 20 players will win a seat at the championship event. In other words, if 100 sign up, ~ 5 players will win a seat.

That’s just the opener, however.

Starting Friday, Jan. 27, six consecutive qualifiers will be held through Sunday the 29th (winners of Sunday events will join the championship on Day 1B Jan. 30), each with different odds at winning a seat.

For example, players in Friday’s (Jan. 27) 3pm qualifier will see a $100 + $20 buy-in and ~ one seat awarded per 35 players. On the other end, players in Sunday’s 3pm satellite, with a $700 + $50 buy-in, will see ~ one in five players win seats.

Whatever qualifier you choose, it’s a way into the big time event as well as some nice tournament action in its own right.

Weekend poker action at Borgata always provides first rate cash games and a chance for some hardcore tournament play in our newly refurbished poker room. And with some mild winter temperatures expected this weekend, it's a pretty good time to come down, play a little poker and take in the football action on our additional 23 new flat screen tvs.

At 6pm, Borgata’s popular bounty tournaments continue with our Green Chip Bounty ($25) with a $200 + $30 +$25 buy-in followed by our $80 + $20 No Limit tournament at 11pm.

Two tournaments are offered Saturday with a $150 + $30 No Limit tournament at 11am and a $300 + $40 No Limit Tournament at 6pm, the richest buy-in of the week.

Sundays offers up two $100 + $20 tournaments at 11am and 3pm respectively.

For cash players, the Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot stands at more than $304,000 going into Friday’s play.

The Borgata offers the best jackpot system in the city with our full jackpot paying out to a bad beat with quad 10s at minimum and a small bad beat jackpot paying for quad deuces to quad nines at a minimum. The current small bad beat jackpot stands at $50,000.

Speaking of payouts, here’s a late update on the last Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot Hit which gave an early holiday present to Charles Zitomer of Cherry Hill. The jackpot hit Friday, Dec. 23 at 8pm on a $1-$2 No Limit table for better than $458,000 and gave Zitomer a $183,232 payout after his quad jacks were upended by Oren Taylor of Bridgeton, NJ, who had a straight flush.

This was the 95th hit for a Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot and brings the total payouts for the jackpot to more than $11.5 million. You can check the bad beat totals daily.

Bounty Hunting at the Borgata Winter Poker Open

Heads up, a showdown, mano y mano. Whatever you call it, tournament play often comes down to a matter of two players squaring off on a critical hand. One is the hunter, the other the hunted.

To win overall, maneuvering competitors to go all in and sending them to the rail is a must. Usually taking out a player simply advances you in the tournament, but in Borgata's innovative Bounty Tournaments, there's an extra reward - a nice shiny cash chip for every player forced out.

For the 2012 Borgata Winter Open (Jan. 18-Feb. 3), we've scheduled six special bounty tournaments among the 28 main events, including five Black Chip ($100) Bounty tournaments and also one Purple Chip Bounty with a $500 casino chip on every player's head.

The bounty tournaments were introduced at Borgata in the summer and have added a unique twist to tournament action. Along with the regular buy-in, each player buys a casino chip for the bounty amount and then places it in front of their chip stack. If a player is knocked out of the tournament, the winner of the hand pockets that chip.

It's a chance to win even if you don't cash in the tournament. But if you do go far, you're bound to rack up some serious bounty wins.

At the Borgata Fall PokerOpen, Harry Korotki of Owings Mill, Md. won the $500 Purple Chip Bounty Tournament, pocketing 10 purple $500 chips ($5,000 for those who don't do math) along the way. He also won $39,804 for the $500, buy-in tournament, which drew 304 entries.

For the Borgata Winter Open, the bounty action starts right away at 11am on Thursday, Jan. 19, with Event 2, a Black Chip Bounty $350 + $50 + $100 tournament.

Other Black Chip Bounty tournaments include:

Happy New Year from the Borgata Poker Room!

Expect 2012 to be another great year for players at Atlantic City’s preeminent poker room, with another year of great tournament and cash action, including the 7th annual Borgata Winter Poker Open starting January 18.

We start the year with a just completed $1 Million renovation of the Borgata Poker Room, which includes new carpeting throughout, plush seating and the strategic placing of an additional 23 flat screen televisions throughout the facility, so you can catch up on the games in those stretches when the deuce, sevens just keep coming.

The renovation’s highlight is our new High Stakes Cash Room we’re calling The Board Room. The high-limit, two-table lounge will offer a wide variety of games, all starting with a $10,000 buy-in. And you should see the place, with luxurious seating, dark wood veneers and 45 personalized poker lockers (you know you need a place to keep the shades and hoodies). There’s also four 60-inch LED screens, because everything’s bigger in The Board Room.

Of course, the new year’s first big event is the 2012 Borgata Winter Open, which starts Wednesday Jan. 18 with a $500,000 Guaranteed Deep Stack No Limit ($500 + $60) tournament. Expect a big field. The 2011 Winter Open’s opening tournament drew an impressive 1,472 players with a total buy-in of $736,000.

The highlight of the tournament is the $2 Million Guaranteed Borgata Winter Open Championship starting Sunday and Monday, Jan. 29 and 30. The $3,300 + $200 championship event will be played over five days ending Friday Feb. 3. The 2011 Borgata Winter Open Championship drew 718 players and a total buy-in of $2,369,400. so again, expect a large competitive field.

At approximately 3:15 AM the Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot hit for $50,000 on a $5-$10 NL game in the Borgata Poker Room. The eight participants jumped and shouted for joy as you would expect.
Board ran out: 3♦4♠ 7♥3♥6♥.

Nina Coffin (Livingston, NJ) with A♥9♥ flopped the nut flush, but would be beat by two other opponents.

James Gargiso (Staten Island, NY) won the hand with his 4♥ 5♥ along with $10,000 Cash from the Bad Beat prize money.

Inside The Minds Training Session

I’m really excited to announce my partnership with Jason Young and Josh Brikis to bring world-class poker training to everyone that is looking to improve their games, called Inside The Minds. I have been playing professionally for over four years now and have been teaching the game most of that time as well. I have always had my eye on other players who I thought I might be able to team up with to teach to bigger groups and the two people who really stood out to me were Jason and Josh.

The last series that I played at Borgata in September, arrangements were confirmed to develop the inaugural Inside The Minds training session. This was a no brainer for us, as Borgata is the leader when it comes to poker and continues to find innovative ways to provide valuable services to poker players. Our team has a huge following of fans and respect from the poker community – and our success in tournaments and at the cash tables is unquestioned.

The Inside The Minds training session is something that anyone looking to improve his/her game simply cannot pass up. It is extremely important for poker players to continue to improve their game. There are a lot of poker players out there who don’t recognize the value of learning from others, but for those that do, Inside The Minds is the place to truly elevate their game: turning break-even players into winning players and winning players into dominate players!

Jason, Josh and I have spent many hours playing, studying, and talking poker – compiling and analyzing information and formulating strategies to identify what it really takes to consistently win. We have prepared this information to share with everyone who decides to get Inside The Minds.

Our first full-day session will be held Tuesday, November 15th at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City. Anyone who wants to learn everything about our games can attend for $500. Considering the cost of most tournaments, or even a cash game buy-in or two, we feel this price-point is a steal for those that want to come to this session. There is nowhere else that you can get in-person instruction, hands-on analysis and truly hear everything that professional poker players think about the game and their strategies for consistently winning for such a low cost.

Our sessions are designed for players of all skill levels. Whether you have only been playing for a couple of years or you have been grinding tournaments for some time now, we will have tips and strategies that will take your game to a higher level. Being able to kick off our inaugural training session during the Borgata Fall Poker Open is a win for all of us. I know that the three of us are going to have some amazing runs based on the preparation we are making for training others, and I also know that there are people that are going to attend our session that will make some runs that they wouldn’t have if they didn’t attend.

I am thankful to Ray and Borgata for making it possible for us to get this initiative started and look forward to seeing the success of those who take advantage of this opportunity to get Inside The Minds!

Less than 3 days after surpassing $10 Million in Bad Beat Jackpot payouts, the Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot hit again!

Around 1AM this morning on a $2-$4 Hold'em table, seven players saw a board of 3-K-3-Q-K. That's when the room went wild. Frances Traficante (Leesburgh, FL) and her Quad 3's lost the hand to Althea Taylor (Mt. Laurel, NJ) and her Quad K's, but ended up winning the BBJ of $16,651. Taylor won the pot and an additional $8,325.

Early this morning on a $1-$2 No Limit Hold'em table, the Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot hit for $47,767.

Thomas Davenport (South Amboy, NJ), was holding pocket 4's, while Kenneth Weliczka (Gansevoort, NY) held pocket 6's. Two 6's on the board allowed Kenneth to win the pot. However, Thomas' quad 4's were good enough to win $19,108 of the Bad Beat Jackpot. Kenneth picked up an additional $9,553.
